
Bhootnath (Guru Dutt) comes to Calcutta in search of a job and finds shelter at a Zamindar's haweli where his munh-boli bahen's husband is working as Masterji. He finds a job working at a factory that makes Mohini Sindoor(said to have the power to attract the attention of one's love interest).
Chhote Sarkar (Rehman), one of the Zamindar brothers, spends all his time at a Nachne wali's kotha. The beautiful and virtuous Chhoti Bahu (Meena Kumari) seeks Bhootnath's help to obtain Mohini Sindoor, to get her husband's attention...has initial success with dire consequences...
The story, written by Bimal Mitra is based in Calcutta(British India).
Nargis had turned down the role of "Chhoti bahu" to spend more time with young Sanjay Dutt.
Guru Dutt had considered Shashi Kapoor and Biswajit for the role of "Bhootnath" before deciding to do it himself.
