Guru Dutt (Vasanth Kumar Padukone) was born on July 9, 1925 in Bangalore, India.
He did his schooling in Bengal and spoke fluent Bengali.
He was a well known actor, director and producer in Bombay film industry. Some of his memorable films were Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar, Mr. and Mrs. 55, C.I.D., Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and Kagaz ke Phool.
He married Geeta Roy in 1953 overcoming a great deal of family opposition. Later, he was said to have a romantic involvement with Waheeda Rehman. He died on October 10, 1964 from overdose of sleeping pills.
"Pyaasa" is a story of a struggling poet Vijay (GuruDutt) who was ditched by his love, Meena(Mala Sinha). She married a wealthy publisher, Mr. Ghosh(Rehman). Vijay meets a prostitute, Gulabo(Waheeda), who loves his poems and gets those published. At the end, Vijay, who had enough of this selfish world, leaves with his true companion, Gulabo.
In 2004, the sound track of Pyaasa was chosen as Best film music by British film institute magazine.
This was the last collaboration of the popular SDB, Sahir team.
The story was partly based on the life of its writer Chandra Shekhar 'Prem' .
The song...
"Hum aap ki aankhon mein" was added upon pressure from the distributors...as a relief from a pessimistic story.
Guru Dutt had initially hoped for Nargis, Madhubala and Dilip Kumar for the roles of Meena, Gulabo and Vijay.
For this tribute, I am posting one of my live recordings from 2 years back.
Movie: Pyaasa (1957)

Live performances are no easy task by any means! You have done a beautiful job with this thoughtful number! Loved it!
Thank you for sharing such a treat.
Given well justice to Geeta Dutt's voice. Perfect singing.
Second Azam. A beautiful job and that too sung live. Loved it.
You made me peep back into my past memorylanes...
Fully grateful for rekindling the memories associated with those unique and wonderful artists who are no longer amidst us all. Their contributions to music and entertainment are price-less, indeed!!!
Regards.

It is amazing that you attempted to sing this during a live performance. I agree with Mr. Azam when he says that live performances are definitely not an easy task. On the whole, you have a very distinct identity that you have attempted to sing a naughty song like this.
Your choice of songs is also different because songs like these would hardly be heard on other audio blogs. Great way to keep lonely people engrossed in finding good music.
However, have you tried singing Mann Mohana Bade Jhoote from Seema or Raat aur Din Diya Jale from Raat Aur Din??
Thank you Paras. Just got some sad news about a friend. But listening to your voice and the melody soothed my feeling of helplessness. Thanks a lot.
I have always said that Geeta Dutt's songs fit your voice the best. Thanks for proving my point again.
As usual, you captured the mood very well, and emoted the 'natkhatpan' perfectly! As you know, SDB sang the bengali version of this song (Mono Dilona Bodhu) himself. Remarkable creation.
Live recording? And with a live sitar too? Was it a stage-show, or in a studio? Sounds more of a studio to me, as each piece of instruments are being played in PERFECT coordination with each other, without any flaw whatsoever. Usually in stage shows, this sort of 110% accuracy (in musical accompaniment) is rare (unless of course it's in India, where most musicians are pro).
Sorry for being late Paras!
Beautiful selection and perfect fit to your voice. Love listening Geeta Dutt's songs which suits you so well.
Nice expressions and interesting write-up. Very well done & enjoyed listening very much!

Asim: I appreciate your sincere comments. I would like to find that song by SDB...would be a treat. Thanks for that information.
It is a karaoke track, live singing, recording..no studio...we have a small group.
I hesitated to post it so far as it had no scope for noise removal, volume adjustment or effects except for whatever the mixer must be set at.
Dinesh: I am happy you liked this song.
Ajay: If you ever send me a bill(oops!) for your time spent on my songs...I will have to write...IOU..
I could not wait till evening to listen. Your voice matches very well with Geeta Dutt's voice. Excellent job.
Guru Dutt was sentimental direct. He was number one in my book then Rishikesh Mukharjee and Bimal Roy.

We enjoyed it thoroughly.

Would love to hear Burman Da's version of this song that Mr. Asim Ghosh talks about... Where can I find it?
The gravitas of your voice and excellent Geeta Dutt cadences makes it a charming rendition - well done.
