Mukesh Chand Mathur (22 July 1923, Delhi, British India – 27 August 1976 Detroit, USA)Mukesh was the sixth in a family of ten children. Mukesh left school after the 10th grade and worked for a short time for the Delhi Department of Public Works.
Mukesh and Sarla Trivedi (1928 –2008) eloped and got married in a temple. Sarla was from a wealthy Gujarati Brahmin family. The couple had five children, Rita, Nitin(playback singer), Nalini(d. 1978), Mohnish and Namrata.
Mukesh was noticed by Motilal(a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister's wedding. Motilal brought him to Bombay. He got his break as a playback singer in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar . The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne de, which was filmed on Motilal. Mukesh was a fan of K L Sehgal and initially emulated him.
Mukesh also tried and make it as a singing star. Mashuqa (1953) with Suraiya and Anuraag (1956) with Usha Kiran both failed at the box-office. He also did a small role as a tangewala enacting his own song - "Chhoti si ye Zindgani" in Aah (1953)Mukesh is best known as the voice (playback) of Raj Kapoor, but he has sung maximum songs for Manoj Kumar.
Mukesh died of a heart attack in Detroit in 1976, where he had gone for a concert with Lata Mangeshkar.
He received Filmfare awards for ...
- Sab kuchh seekha, Anari (1959)
- Sab se bada nadaan,Pehchan (1970)
- Jai bolo beimaan ki, Beimaan (1972)
- Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein, Kabhi Kabhi (1976..after death).
